Sweet!

I haven't purchased much vintage lately. Instead of focusing on some of my Reds wantlist items I've been consumed with trying to track down 2011 Gypsy Queen autographs and other modern cards. Luckily I was able to stumble across this 1909 T206 Rebel Oakes Sweet Caporal on eBay for just a hair over $30 shipped. Although Rebel is not Mr. Oakes given name, it's Ennis for those that are interested, one interesting tidbit of information I found fascinating wat that both he and Miller Huggins were traded from the Reds to the Cardinals in 1910 for Fred Beebe. With this purchase I now have 13 of the 24 T206 Reds cards that comprise this set. I would like to try and purchase one or two more before the end of the year.

Another Smokin Card for my Collection!

It's been almost two weeks since my last post. Sorry for the delay, but I was with my family taking a much needed spring break in the Outer Banks. First time visiting and it'll probably be the last since I wasn't too impressed. But hey, at least I traveled to a place I had never been before. When I returned this nice little addition to my card collection was awaiting me in my mailbox. This is the third tobacco card I now have in my possession...and by far my favorite. It would be an understatement to say that Larry McLean lived life through a bottle. His career ended when he was involved in a brawl with Giants manager John McGraw and coach Dick Kinsella in 1915. McLean died on March 14, 1921 when he was shot by a bartender in Boston during a barroom brawl.

Piedmont, anyone?!

Last week I was debating if I should knock out some of the cards I need from my vintage Topps Reds team sets. Lately I've been focusing all my energy (and money) on the 55 and 56 sets. I've also been pulled by the desire of getting a few more bobbleheads that have been given out at Great American Ballpark the past few years that I need for that collection. But something happened last week that threw me for a loop. While I was browsing on ebay I came across this little gem. I've always wanted a t206 Reds tobacco card, but they've always been a little too pricey for me to pull the trigger. $40+ is a little hard to swallow, but I know that if I want some of the Hall of Famers like Clark Griffith I'll have to ante up eventually. So anyway, when I saw this Bob Spade card for $25.99 I couldn't resist. I received the card in the mail this past Saturday and it was like Christmas when I opened the envelope. I'm so excited to add this card to my collection. This Spade is now the oldest card I have in my collection and it's the first card that my wife thought was "cool"! So there's one more item to mark off on my 2012 collecting goals. Onward and upward!
